Lewisohn Stadium: On the Auction Block

You have the opportunity to become the proud owner of Lewisohn Stadium!

During Homecoming Week, May 3-8, 1999, the Friends of the Library will sponsor a Silent Auction featuring the City College Service Plate depicting the stadium as it looked in 1937.

The blue plate, one of the series of 12 commissioned in 1937 by the Alumni Association from Josiah Wedgwood, Ltd. of England, was designed by Albert Schweizer (Class of 1920).

Philanthropist Adolph Lewisohn donated the funds for the stadium named in his honor, and construction was completed in 1915.  Lewisohn Stadium was used for college sports, including football until 1951, for ROTC drills and reviews, and—perhaps its best known use—for summer symphony concerts each year through 1966.  Though the North Academic Center now sits on the site, Lewisohn Stadium remains a proud symbol of the history of CCNY.

The inspiration for collegiate commemorative dinnerware goes back to the oldest traditions of Oxford and Cambridge.  When Harvard took up the tradition in the United States, designs were carried out in china rather than in the silver used in England.

You may bid on the stadium plate in Cohen Library from 9 a.m. - 11 p.m.  Monday, May 3 through Thursday, May 6; from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Friday, May 7, and from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8.  Bidding will begin at $100, and each new bid must be at least $2 more than the previous bid. Bids below the posted minimum bid will not be honored. All bids are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The auction will end promptly at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.  No bids may be registered after that time.  The winner will be announced during the Homecoming Reception in the NAC Rotunda at 4:30 p.m. Payment is due upon notification of winner.   Any questions regarding the auction should be addressed to the Library Office at 650-7271.

Science/Engineering Library Update

Visitors to the Science/Engineering Library's World Wide Web home page will find a newly enhanced version pointing to numerous worthwhile sites.  As the Web continues to evolve so will this home page.  Professor Mounir Khalil, with the assistance of Professors Philip Barnett and Claudia Lascar, coordinates the site.

Point your web browser to the City College Library home page:  www.ccny.cuny.edu/library. Click on "Campus Libraries," then click on "Science/Engineering Library."  Here you will see links to all the major sciences and branches of engineering.  Clicking on any one of these leads you to a screen of individual sites for that field as well as to guides to that specialty.

For example, clicking on "Chemistry Sources" leads you to sites listing the major professional chemical societies, guides to electronic chemistry resources, and  individual sites useful to students and faculty at CCNY. Pages for the other disciplines follow a similar pattern.

The Science/Engineering Library home page also has descriptions of resources offered in the library, such as our CD-ROM databases: INSPEC, Biological Abstracts, and Science Citation Index.

Clicking on "Electronic Journals:" leads you to a list of over 100 full-text journals  containing articles complete with every word, table, figure, and diagram. You simply click on the  journal title and its home page appearsÑno password needed. Why not see if your favorite journal is here!  Electronic journals are proliferating, so be sure to check this site often.  Because of licensing restrictions, many titles are accessible only at City College workstations. We clearly indicate which journals have this restriction.

We appreciate your suggestions and comments. Please send them to us at:  moucc@cunyvm.cuny.edu.
