Library Says Goodbye to Long-time Faculty
Professor Arthur Knieriem After 31 years on the library staff, one of City Colleges own alumni retired from full-time employment this past January. Professor Knieriem majored in English, graduating with the class of 1965, and then enrolled in the School of Library Service at Columbia University. While there he worked at the Fine Arts Library and was awarded an internship at the City College Library. After receiving his MLS degree in 1967 and serving a tour of duty with the U.S. Marine Corps, Arthur started as a Teaching Assistant at the City College Library. He then earned an MA in English at New York University. Professor Knieriem covered many functional areas within the library over the course of his tenure here. Most recently he headed two divisions - Government Documents and Materials Processing and Conservation. Prior to these assignments he had worked primarily in the Serials Division under his most appreciated mentor Professor Russell Burghardt. He also served brief periods in the Architecture Library, the Education/Psychology Library, the Reference Division, the Acquisitions Division, and the Serials Division where he was a serials cataloger. His interests lay strongly in the areas of American literature, popular culture/movies, physical education, and the subtleties and nuances of the book as physical object. His extra-curricular activities included service as a member of the By-laws Committee of the Library Association of CUNY, treasurer of the library social committee, and president of his local public librarys Friends group. In his retirement Arthur plans to continue this volunteer work while enjoying traveling and extended family and home responsibilities. |
Professor Frances Chambers Frances Chambers joined the library staff in 1965 as a member of the Acquisitions Division. From her earliest assignment as supervisor of the bibliographic searching unit, her skill as a bibliographer and builder of the librarys collections was evident. Beginning with a part time public service assignment in 1975 she became an accomplished reference librarian, serving in the Architecture and Science Libraries before joining the Reference Division in Cohen Library in 1985. She served as Collection Development Coordinator in 1996-1997. Professor Chambers annotated bibliography France was published in 1980 (revised in 1990) by the ABC-Clio Press and received an "Outstanding Academic Book" citation from Choice (the review publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries). She published other well regarded bibliographies in this series: Haiti (1983 revised, 1994); Trinidad and Tobago (1986), and Guyana (1989). She edited the librarys newsletter, CircumSpice between 1975 and 1978. When she came to City College, Professor Chambers held a BA from the College Misericordia and an MLS from Rutgers. She later earned an MA in English Literature from Hunter (1969) and an MA in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language from Teachers College, Columbia University (1985). In addition, she undertook extensive study of the French language both here and in Paris and work in several other languages as well. She travelled extensively in Europe and Asia, and in the academic year 1986-87 she was a lecturer in the Fulbright program in the former Yugoslavia. |
