New Library Faculty
Professor Andrew Gessner will join the Library Department faculty in mid-April as City Colleges first Art and Architecture Slide Librarian. He will manage and staff the separate slide collections of the Art Department and the School of Architecture, and will provide reference service and research assistance to users of these collections. He will also work on plans for developing and implementing a digital-image center incorporating cutting-edge imaging technology for art and architecture slides, prints, and other images.
In 1997
Professor Gessner received his Master of Library Science degree
from Queens College, CUNY. He also has a masters degree in
Urban Affairs and Policy Analysis from the New School for Social
Research and a bachelors degree in Art History from
Columbia University.
As the Director of the Slide Collection at Parsons School of Design from 1987-1992, Professor Gessner oversaw the management and staffing of the collection, implemented more efficient research and recataloging procedures for the collection, designed a computerized system with data collection and data entry procedures, and provided reference and technical support for faculty members. He also periodically curated, produced, and installed exhibits.
From 1992-1995, Professor Gessner worked as a Data Manager for the Brooklyn Pediatric AIDS Network. In this position he coordinated data collection and data entry efforts and monitored data activities and quality control indicators, provided training, trouble-shooting, and general technical support for system users, and oversaw the installation, maintenance, and day-to-day operation of the networks computer and telecommunications equipment.
Professor Gessners most recent position was at New York Universitys Bobst Library as a Reference Associate in the Business and Social Science Reference Center. There he provided reference assistance to patrons, taught the use of the Internet, coordinated the development of database guides for electronic resources, acted as electronic resource and systems liaison, and produced WWW subject pages that included imaging and graphic design.
