Art Donation
Artist Joseph Konopka gave the City College Library his oil painting, Sunbather #2, in memory of CCNY alumnus Philip Desind (class of 1934 and 1938, MSE), who owned the Capricorn Galleries in Bethesda, MD, one of the leading repositories of twentieth-century American art. Mr. Konopka, associated with the gallery since 1974, described Mr. Desind as an art collector and avid promotor of painters in the D.C. area.
NJARTform describes Mr. Konopka’s work as possessing a quiet realism and a sun-drenched intensity. His acrylic color palette is admired for its purity of color saturation. The artist’s works are in many collections, including those of the National Museum of American Art, the Museum of the City of New York, the National Museum (Warsaw, Poland), and the Vatican Museum.
This 1966 work is on display in the Cohen Library Atrium.
