Food for Library Fines
The library, in cooperation with the Finley Student Center, Office of Co-curricular Life, began a new program during the last two weeks of the fall 1997 semester that offered students who owed library fines the opportunity of donating canned food instead of paying the fine.
From December 10 through December 23, 1997, the library collected 217 cans of food for distribution to local food pantries. Library fines of $217 were forgiven as cans valued at $.50 or more were offered in lieu of fines. Local food pantries that agreed to pick up the canned goods included the Beth-Hark Crisis Center, the Food & Hunger Hotline for Families with Children, and the Salvation Army at Lenox Avenue and 138th Street.
The success of the program over a relatively short period of time has encouraged the library and the Office of Co-Curricular Life to offer the program again next year over a longer period, from the beginning of November through the end of the semester.

The Friends of the City College Library
We are sincerely grateful to all those who have generously supported the City College Library this year. Private gifts play a crucial role, enabling the Library collections to continue to grow. We wish to offer our donors special recognition for all they have done.
The gifts listed here represent the vital commitment of individuals to the library. Donors of both monetary gifts and collections are listed according to the total amount of their library donations.
William Matthews
The library was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death last month of William Matthews, professor of English in the City College creative writing program.
Professor Matthews, one of the "City College Literary Luminaries" on our National Library Week program last April, was a prolific poet, editor, and lecturer, with ten books of poetry published since 1970. Time & Money, his most recent work, received the National Book Critics Circle award for poetry.
Prof. Matthews' energy and talent will be greatly missed.
