Wine Tasting with Friends
On Monday evening, October 20, the Friends
of the City College Library hosted a first for the library
a wine-tasting event in the Archives. The Friends were joined by
others eager to learn how to identify good wines at a moderate
price. Two experienced sommeliers, Professor Francis Lorenzini
and Adrian Goodlad, led the group through a tasting of six white
and six red wines, while informatively answering questions such
as: Why is a particular pinot astringent? What does a
"musty" cork smell like? Can you suggest a robust red
to go with steak? Our wine experts answered these and other
questions to the attendees satisfaction.
Experienced as a wine judge and speaker, Professor Lorenzini has been a faculty member for the past eight years in the Hospitality Management Department at New York City Technical College. He served as chairman of the 128th Salon of Culinary Arts in 1996. Mr. Goodlad is also an experienced wine judge and speaker, as well as a consultant and writer. He is restaurant critic for Food and Wines of France, and is manager of the International Wine Gallery in Garden City.
The evening was a great success, sending a newly informed group home to stock their respective cellars. This Friends event was the first of the academic year and was sponsored by MCS Canon. Look for upcoming events sure to be of interest to the campus community.
