A New Look at the Science/Engineering library
During the past year the Science/Engineering Library has undergone a number of improvements in its physical layout and appearance. We were informed early in the fall 1999 semester that we would be receiving new carpeting during intersession. We took the opportunity to make several other changes in the physical setup of the library. We shifted the reference indexes located to the left of our entrance to an area opposite the reference book stacks. We then moved a dozen tables to the former index area to create a space for group study. The area east of the reference book and index stacks is now used exclusively for quiet study.
We are still shifting a number of indexes that we have been storing in our closed stacks area. It is our intention to eventually shift or discard all these indexes and to convert the space vacated into a small (hopefully electronic) classroom. Toward the end of June, we replaced the antiquated (and very ugly) movable partition next to our security gates with a permanent, sturdier, windowed partition, allowing our circulation staff a clear view of our new study area. The area between our circulation and reference desks is perhaps a bit noisier, but it is also friendlier and more welcoming. A number of patrons have complimented us on the change, telling us that they like the feel of openness as they enter the library.
